Village of Love
Zone 3
The Village of Love, located 20 kilometers north west of Nipawin,
is a small farming community of about 100 people. The early days
of this area saw little settlement primarily because the two main
waterways, the Churchill and the Saskatchewan Rivers. However, the
area has abundant wildlife and provided a rich livelihood for the
people in the area. With abundant game, large forests and many lakes,
Love and the adjacent Narrow Hills Provincial Park was an important
source of hunting and trapping for many years. In the early part
of this century, the area was basically uninhabited and isolated,
but by the 1920's, the area was home to many loggers, trappers, hunters
and fishermen and by the 1940's a well established road had been
constructed. This was the hey day of Love, it boasted a population
of 250 and many businesses. The disappearance of the White Spruce
led to a decline in population, and a change in the economy, from
forestry to mixed farming operations.
Today, the Village of
Love is most famous for its name and the notoriety behind it. In
1993, Canada Post unveiled a unique post stamp to honor
the community. The Post Mistress in Love receives hundred's of requests
a year for a post mark "from Love".
The community of Love
prides itself on being the "Gateway to
the Narrow Hills Park", which has excellent hunting, fishing
as well as snowmobile and cross country ski trails. The Village of
Love hosts a Gospel Jamboree in July and a Winter Festival in February
(near Valentine's Day of course)
